Walter H. Aikens - President and CEO

After graduating from the University of Richmond, Walter Aikens came to work for H&W in 1972. In 1984, he was elected President of the corporation and has been actively involved in the day-to-day operations since. In the past 35 years, Walter has not only been a contractor, but has become a developer focusing on an array of different projects from Martinsburg, West Virginia down the 81-corridor to Woodstock, Virginia. Along with his knowledge in the construction field, Walter is actively involved with other companies that he owns and operates under the Aikens Group umbrella. He is the president of the Aikens Hotel Group and President of his many commercial and residential developments. As a result of meeting his personal goals, he has become recognized in the community for his business knowledge and sits on many local boards. Walter is on the Board of the United Bank in Winchester, and he is a Trustee for Shenandoah University.

William Aikens - Project Manager & VP of Operations

William Aikens graduated from James Madison University in 2000. After receiving his degree in Human Resource Management, William decided to work for the family business. Since the start of his full-time employment with H&W, William has been exposed to a multitude of projects which he has managed.

When beginning his career with the company, he was responsible for the construction of single-family homes in the Willow Lawn Development, an age-qualified retirement community. Throughout his career William has been exposed and managed the construction of many commercial buildings and hotels under the Aikens Group Umbrella.

After managing several other projects for the Company, William was then moved to manage the entire excavation division. This gave William the chance to work on a variety of projects and bid new work for the company. William has established strong ties to other large contracting companies in the area, such as Howard Shockey, and has performed the excavation work on many of their large-scale projects around the community.

In 2006, William was named Vice President of Operations; therefore overseeing all daily duties associated H&W Construction. William works closely with all of the project managers and estimators on a daily basis to ensure that the work is getting completed and customer relations are upheld. Daily duties include visits to job sites, meetings with engineers and architects and owners, development of project schedule, supervision of project managers and schedules, and ordering of material needed for large excavation job sites. William has grown accustomed to a high paced workday and strives every day to meet and exceed the customers’ and management’s expectations.

Todd Bennett - Estimator and Customer Relations

Todd Bennett came to work for H & W Construction in May of 2011. He has brought with him 32 years of building industry knowledge from the planning stages, thru construction and finishing the product with complete customer satisfaction. Prior to coming to H & W he was employed with the Glaize Companies for 32 years doing anything from scheduling deliveries, managing the sales team, estimating and selling everything from lumber, trusses, windows and doors to paint and hardware. Since he was born and raised in the Winchester area he has developed strong relationships with the industry leaders here in several fields of construction and uses his knowledge to find the best products for the customer. While assisting the project managers and management with estimating the project he is constantly looking for ways to streamline projects and stay on schedules with constant communication with the customers and suppliers.

Gary Legge - Estimator and Survey Coordinator

Gary joined H & W Construction team in the spring of 2012. Along with estimating Gary helps with the survey and computation work on all of H&W Constructions jobs. Prior to joining H & W Construction, he worked for Marsh and Legge Land Surveyors where he lent his Experience and expertise in Land surveying, bidding projects, and scheduling teams. Gary has worked in surveying since 1974 for other local survey companies. Gary’s knowledge in his field and outstanding work ethic make him a pleasure to Work with. Customer satisfaction is a priority and he will go the extra mile to meet a customer’s needs.

Mark Cooney - Excavation Manager

Mark Cooney started his career with H&W in 2008. Mark acts as H&W’s excavation superintendent and his duties include the daily scheduling of 30 employees on H&W’s excavation side, job stakeout and engineering, supervision of his excavation labor, and meeting with engineers and customers. Mark works very closely with William in the scheduling, development, and coordination of projects to make sure deadlines are strictly adhered to. Prior to his career with H&W, Mark worked for FEMA’s Logistic Center and was responsible for setup of disaster field operations and providing internal logistical support service to Federal response personnel as needed. This involved the coordination of mobilizing the necessary equipment, vehicles, communication capabilities, and operational facilities if a major disaster would hit anywhere in the country. Years ago, Mark also owned and operated his own transportation company, where he managed logistical operations, planning and bookkeeping for a small fleet of trucks that hauled masonry products.

Dave Dehaven - Executive Project Manager & Commercial Maintenance Supervisor

Dave started working for H&W Construction in 1997. During his time with the company, he has built hotels, banks, office buildings, single family homes and managed most any other type of construction. Prior to coming to H&W Dave was in business for himself building single family homes and some smaller commercial structures. Along with his building skills, David also holds his master in electrical, plumbing, and fire alarm. Besides being a project manager he oversaw the maintenance of 7 hotels, 300 apartment units and a large number of commercial buildings.

Steve Steiner - Project Manager

In 2001 Steve began his career with H&W Construction Company. Since coming to H&W, he has project-managed some of the larger projects for the Aikens Group including three hotels and one hotel addition along with many commercial buildings for H&W customers. From working so closely with the Aikens group, Steve has learned what is expected from management to make a successful project. Steve has been no stranger to management; prior to coming on board, Steve worked for Grove Manufacturing for nine years supervising the construction of booms for their cranes, and was the plant manager at Glaze Components for thirteen years. Steve’s H&W duties include daily interaction with the crew members and subcontractors associated with his project. In addition, he is responsible for maintaining project schedule and submittals associated with the project. Steve’s experience and knowledge make him a well-rounded individual that performs well with the team involved with the project and the customer.

Michael Adamy – Operations Manager & Estimator

Mike joined H & W Construction in August of 2015 and brings over 30 years of management experience to our team.  Since graduating from West Virginia University with a degree in Human Resource Management, he has held various management positions in the transportation, manufacturing, and the construction industry.  Mike has established strong community ties to the local area and he has worked extensively with local governments, engineers, architects, and financial institutions to design and develop various construction projects in the Shenandoah Valley.

Prior to joining H & W, Mike has been a licensed Class A General Contractor in the State of Virginia since 1996.  He has a strong working knowledge of all phases of commercial, residential, and agricultural construction.  From the local building associations, Mike was honored to receive various awards for his design and development projects in our community.  His ability to provide direction will be an asset for our company’s future growth.
